Posting Signs to Power Poles Should be Avoided

A utility pole may seem like a convenient place to post a "yard sale" or "wireless internet" sign but attaching these items to utility poles can be dangerous for our linemen.

Our line crews work around the clock in all types of weather conditions, and attaching items like signs or posters to utility poles can cause serious hazards because it impacts the ability of our line crews to do their job safely.

If a lineman needs to climb a pole to either access equipment or restore power during an outage, these items become hazardous obstacles. Even a small nail can puncture a lineman's clothes and gloves or snag safety gear, making the lineman vulnerable to falls or possibly electrocution. Nails can also puncture a lineman's skin, causing bodily harm.

In addition to being unsafe, it is also illegal. Posting signs on utility poles is against Mississippi state law and a violation of the National Electrical Safety Code.

We know our poles appear to be a high-visibility place to post messages, but please know all signs that we encounter will be removed. Our linemen thank you for your cooperation.
