How to Avoid Utility Scams

Scammers never take a day off! We receive weekly reports from our members of utility scam calls. Although they are annoyingly frustrating, they are also monetarily dangerous to those who are unable to recognize that the call is indeed a scam.

Here are a few things to know about utility scam calls:

  • 📞Scammers don't care that you are listed on the Do Not Call list. Because they are acting illegally, they are not following the rules and regulations of telemarketers. This list will not protect you from receiving potential scam calls.
  • 📞Scammers will spoof local numbers to call you in order to gain your trust. If you are ever asked for your financial or personal information over the phone, hang up and call the utility back directly.
  • 📞Scammers are smart! They may present you with knowledge of your personal information in order to gain your trust. Again, always hang up and call the utility directly to verify the validity of the call.
  • 📞Scammers will forcefully demand payment immediately and threaten actions, such as disconnection of service. Don't fall for this trick! Never give anyone your personal financial information over the phone.
  • 💻Scammers also operate through email. Although Dixie Electric sends automated disconnect notices by phone and email, you will always be directed to our website or payment portal to update your account.

So, how can you help protect others against scam calls? You can start by having conversations with those vulnerable in your family and community. You can also share this post to help create awareness.

As always, our member service representatives are here to help you with your account information. Although it isn't necessary to call and report a scam, never hesitate to reach out concerning your account information for peace of mind.
