Why We Invest Before We Have To

By Randy Smith

One of the most important responsibilities we have as your electric cooperative is preparing for tomorrow, not just responding to today.

When people think about utility infrastructure, they often do so only when something goes wrong. A power outage, a broken pole, or an aging piece of equipment can quickly remind us how much we depend on the systems that serve our homes and businesses every day. At Dixie Electric, our goal is to stay ahead of those challenges by reinvesting before potential issues become real problems.

That means replacing poles before they reach the end of their useful life, instead of waiting until they fail. It means upgrading substations before growth creates capacity issues. It means maintaining rights-of-way before vegetation becomes overgrown and impacts reliability. It also means continuously evaluating our system to identify opportunities for improvement long before they become necessities.

Taking this proactive approach requires planning and financial discipline. As a member-owned cooperative, we focus on what will best serve our members for years and even decades to come. Most of the improvements we make are expected to last for 30, 40, or even 50 years or more. This approach isn’t inexpensive, but waiting until something fails or goes wrong is even more costly. Every investment we make is evaluated through that lens.

The same philosophy guided our decision to build a fiber network through DE Fastlink. We recognized that reliable, high-speed internet was becoming just as essential as electricity for many homes and businesses. Rather than waiting for someone else to solve the problem, we invested in infrastructure that would support our communities well into the future.

Many of the improvements we make happen quietly. Members may never notice a new piece of equipment, an upgraded line, or a rebuilt section of the system, but those investments matter. They help improve reliability, support economic growth, and ensure we are prepared to meet the changing needs of our communities.

At Dixie Electric, we believe good stewardship means looking ahead. By investing before we have to, we can continue providing the reliable service our members expect while building a stronger future for the communities we serve.
