For Kimberlee “Kim” Duckworth, helping others has never been about recognition. It is simply a way of life — and it is that heart for service that has earned her the title of Dixie Electric’s 2026 Powering Possibilities Community Service Grant winner.
The Powering Possibilities grant recognizes a local volunteer who goes above and beyond to make their community a better place to live. As this year’s recipient, Duckworth received $1,000 to donate to the charity of her choice, selecting United Way of the Pine Belt Region, where she has spent countless hours volunteering.
Betsy Ivey, Executive Director of the United Way of the Pine Belt Region, nominated Duckworth and said she knew immediately who deserved the recognition.
“I’m certain that she’s the most selfless person that I know,” Ivey said. “I literally have never seen anyone give of themselves as much as Kim does and wants absolutely no recognition for it whatsoever.”
At 64, retirement has simply given Duckworth more opportunities to serve. With a talent for mechanical work and appliance repair, she frequently helps those who may not be able to afford repairs or replacements themselves. She also volunteers in her community, checks on neighbors in need, and has a soft spot for rescue animals.
Duckworth credits her mother with teaching her the importance of caring for others.
“We always had someone different at our house because she’d take them in if they didn’t have a place to go for the night, or if they were hungry,” Duckworth recalled. “So, I learned that from her.”
That lesson continues to guide her today.
“It could always be me that needs the help,” Duckworth said, “and I would want someone to treat me the same way that I try to treat someone else.”
It is a simple philosophy that has quietly touched countless lives — and one that embodies the spirit of Powering Possibilities.
